Carapaz claims historic win for Ecuador in cycling road race

Cyclist Richard Carapaz claimed just a second-ever Olympic gold medal for Ecuador on Saturday with a stunning victory in the men’s road race at the Tokyo Games. The 28-year-old combined with American Brendon McNulty to break clear from the leading group with 24 kilometres to go and began a decisive solo run to gold with 6km left. McNulty faded and was hauled in by the pack who fought for silver and bronze with Belgium’s Wout van Aert crossing a fraction ahead of Slovenian Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar 67 seconds behind the winner.
