Merkel hails G7 talks on climate change as ‘strong commitment’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hailed the results of the Group of Seven (G7) summit regarding climate change as a “strong commitment,” even though the rich industrialized nations could not agree on a date for phasing out coal. “Others have not been able to verify their plans yet to that extent,” said Merkel, adding that Germany was not the cause of the disunity. “But I think the commitment to climate protection, to the 1.5-degree target, to the Paris Agreement by all G7 countries: That’s a strong commitment in itself,” she said.
