Carnival kick-off in Cologne sees average disorder, police say

Around 110 criminal charges were laid as revellers kicked off the carnival season in Cologne, police in the western German city reported on Friday. “We had it all – causing bodily harm, pickpocketing, damage to property, resistance to arrest,” a spokeswoman in the city, one of the main centres of the tradition, said. There had also been “sexual offences of a less serious nature,” he added. Police took 32 people into protective custody, mostly for drunkenness, with three detained temporarily.
