German chancellor hopeful Scholz does not wish to head SPD

Olaf Scholz, the candidate for chancellor put up by the Social Democrats (SPD) in the September elections, will not throw his hat into the ring when the party decides on a new leader at its December conference. Following the announcement by party chairperson Norbert Walter-Borjans that he is standing down as co-leader, Scholz, currently at a G20 meeting in Rome, made clear he will not stand, SPD sources said, confirming earlier reports in the German press.
