German president thanks helpers as flood deaths rise above 140

The number of people who have died in the devastating flooding in western Germany rose further on Saturday, while the president thanked rescue workers who continued to search for survivors. By Saturday afternoon, the death toll reached 141, after police announced 98 fatalities in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, while 43 were confirmed dead in North Rhine Westphalia late on Friday. Police also confirmed 670 injured in the Ahrweiler district, the focus of the crisis in Rhineland-Palatinate.
