Germany remembers the 59 soldiers who died during Afghanistan mission

German leaders paid tribute to the country’s 20-year mission to Afghanistan, in which 59 military personnel lost their lives, at a ceremony in Berlin on Wednesday. “No previous deployment has left its mark on the Bundeswehr the way this deployment to Afghanistan did,” Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said at the ceremony held in the grounds of the Defence Ministry. “None before was as long, as intensive, as dangerous,” she told attendees, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel.
