Germany’s Laschet hoping for boost from debate, local election result

Trailing in the polls, Germany’s conservative candidate for chancellor, Armin Laschet, struck an optimistic tone on Monday after local election results showed a win for his party in local elections in the state of Lower Saxony. His Christian Democrats (CDU) came out on top in the local and municipal elections, with 31.7 per cent of the vote in provisional results, compared to 30 per cent for the Social Democrats (SPD).
