Germany’s Social Democrats elect new leadership at party conference

Just days after taking office as the main party in Germany’s new coalition government, the Social Democrats (SPD) elected a new leadership team for their party at a one-day conference in Berlin on Saturday. A largely digital SPD congress elected the party’s current secretary general, Lars Klingbeil, to join current co-leader Saskia Esken at the head of the party, giving him 86.3 per cent of the vote.
