Hong Kong celebrates anniversary of Chinese rule under protest ban

Hong Kong celebrated the anniversary of its return to Chinese rule in 1997 with a flag-raising ceremony on Thursday, displaying the flag of the former British colony alongside the Chinese national flag at a ceremony in Victoria Harbour. For the second year running, Hong Kong authorities have banned demonstrations marking the July 1, 1997 handover, citing Covid – although critics believe political motives are involved.
