Lukashenko unleashes nationwide raids and arrests in Belarus

A wave of brutal police raids on NGOs and independent media outlets has been unleashed by the authorities controlled by President Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus, according to human rights activists. Armed police raided the offices of the Viasna Human Rights Centre, arresting lawyers and other employees, the organization announced in Minsk on Wednesday. The centre’s internationally-known director, Ales Bialiatski, was among those arrested, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
