Merkel welcomes deal with US on pipeline, but others rail against it

German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the agreement reached with the US government on the controversial Nord Stream 2 undersea pipeline, which will deliver natural gas from Russia to the European Union via Germany, as a good step. Merkel cautioned on Thursday that it does not overcome all the differences, describing the deal as an attempt by the allies to establish certain conditions, which would still have to be implemented.
