Post-lockdown tourism hopes dashed in Germany’s flood-hit areas

Devastated campsites, destroyed holiday homes and hotels, damaged bridges, tracks and roads: The flood disaster in western Germany is hitting the tourism industry hard in regions popular among hikers, cyclists and wine lovers. “For the hosts, who have now lost their livelihood after the long pandemic lockdown, it is an absolute catastrophe,” says Michelle Schwefel, branch manager of the German Holiday Home Association, noting that rural areas are urgently dependent on tourism. “The full extent of the flood and the effects on tourism cannot yet be estimated,” says Schwefel.
