Putin makes case for closer ties between former Soviet republics

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called for closer ties between the countries that once made up the Soviet Union, 30 years after its collapse. At a meeting of the Russia-dominated Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in St Petersburg, Putin said that many things had changed dramatically in the past decades, according to a Kremlin statement. The founding of the CIS in December 1991 had been driven by both the security and economic issues facing its members, Putin argued.
