Putin signs controversial law banning historical forgery

Falsification of historical events has become a punishable offence in Russia as per a controversial law signed into law by President Vladimir Putin on Thursday. The law criminalizes equating Soviet and Nazi actions during World War II, among other things. Historians had previously criticized the law, saying that it could be interpreted too widely. Some also accused the Kremlin of trying to secure a “monopoly on truth” and of relying on strict legislation to ban certain historical viewpoints.
