Several hundred Hamburg port workers demonstrate for jobs

Around 500 port workers took part in a demonstration in the northern German city of Hamburg against job cuts and in favour of securing pay scales, according to the Verdi trade union. “We made it clear that we do not agree with job cuts,” Verdi national division leader Natale Fontana said afterwards on Saturday. He said the background was negotiations on automation, rationalization and work intensification in port operations and the planned merger of the HHLA and Eurogate companies.
