Olaf Scholz is set to succeed Angela Merkel as Germany’s next chancellor, after winning 395 of 707 votes cast in a Bundestag vote. His Social Democrats (SPD), together with the Greens and pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), have 416 seats in the new, 736-seat parliament. Scholz needed a majority of 369 votes. The Social Democrat, who served as Merkel’s deputy and finance minister in the outgoing grand coalition, is now expected at Bellevue Palace, where German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will formally appoint him.
