South Korea told to remove controversial banners at Olympic village

South Korea’s Olympic team was ordered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take down banners at the Olympic village with references to a 16th century war with Japan on Saturday. “The village is a protected area,” IOC president Thomas Bach said. Political statements would not be allowed in the athletes’ village, he said. South Korea’s Olympic Committee confirmed the incident. The banners had been perceived as provocative in Japan.
