Torrential rain in Germany causes havoc in several states

Heavy downpours across western Germany caused massive damage to property, the closure of several motorways, mass evacuations and several casualties on Wednesday. The state of North Rhine Westphalia was worst hit by the heavy rains, which were caused by a low pressure weather system that German meteorologists have named Bernd. Parts of North Rhine Westphalia’s capital Dusseldorf were evacuated on Wednesday in anticipation of the river Duessel bursting its banks.
