Two massive crashes mar Tour de France start; Alaphilippe in yellow

Home hopeful Julian Alaphilippe seized the yellow jersey in a dramatic opening day of the Tour de France which was overshadowed by two massive crashes in the peloton. Several leading riders were caught up in an incident with just over 40 kilometres to go when Tony Martin hit a fan encroaching onto the road and holding a sign – and not looking towards the oncoming cyclists. Alaphilippe was one of several who hit the deck, as was last year’s runner-up Primoz Roglic, but most managed to continue though Germany’s Jasha Suetterlin had to retire.
