World’s most powerful space telescope lifts off on far-flung mission

After 30 years of development, some 10 billion dollars in costs and repeatedly postponed launches, the most powerful telescope ever built was successfully launched into space on Saturday to explore the origins of the universe. Transported by an Ariane rocket, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) took off from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana on Saturday morning, detaching 27 minutes later to begin its four-week journey to its target orbit, some 1.5 million kilometres away – four times farther than the moon.
